Kumaon Exploration is a small adventure travel company that specialises in customised itineraries to the foothills of the Indian Himalaya, in association with our partners Camp Corbett and Blaze-A-Trail Adventures.

Our itineraries provide an introduction to the rich wildlife and magnificent scenery of the mountains and forests of Kumaon and Gahrwal, in Uttarakhand State, north India.

Our tours include a stay at Camp Corbett and/or Mountain Quail Camp, which are both owned and run by the Anand family. Camp Corbett is a small family-run jungle lodge located in a picturesque  setting next to the River Boar near Kaladhungi, about 25 km east of Corbett Tiger Reserve and close to Jim Corbett's own home village of Choti Haldwani.

The lodge has built up a reputation for warm hospitality and relaxed ambience since its foundation in 1987, and is very much in character with its jungle setting.

All aboard for a jungle safari!

Corbett fans will be interested to know that many of the places described by Jim in his exciting tiger-tracking exploits still exist, including the River Boar valley, his childhood “jungle farmyard”, the Glade, the Cane Brakes, and the forests where he encountered the “Pipal Pani” and the “Batchelor of Powalgarh" tigers.

Some of the locations of his man-eater hunts have changed little over the years. We can show you the real "Corbett Country", and much more besides.

The Kaladhungi jungle is still the home of tigers, leopards, elephants, and a multitude of lesser wildlife. The bird life is prolific with 360 species recorded.

These forests are not part of a Wildlife Reserve, so we are able to explore on foot, which makes for a more personal "jungle experience" and better birdwatching.

 Tiger on the prowl

Mountain Quail Camp is located at Pangot on a mountain ridge at an altitude of 2000 metres,  10km west of the hill resort of Naini Tal and one hours' drive from Camp Corbett.  You will be made very welcome by Siddharth and Choti Anand, who have 20 years experience of leading wildlife safaris and treks in the Himalayan foothills.

The extensive oak, pine and rhododendron forests here are  home to leopard, black bear and diverse birds including Lammergeier, Griffon Vulture, Golden Eagle, Forktails and Chir Pheasant.

By staying at both of our jungle lodges, you get the chance to appreciate the bird and animal life at different elevations. There is considerable migratory movement between the plains, foothills and mountains according to the seasons, which adds to the wildlife interest.

 Great Slaty Woodpecker

Many of our tours also visit the nearby Corbett Tiger Reserve, where we must travel by jeep or elephant back. The Reserve, established in 1936,  is a key part of Project Tiger, although the big cats are elusive and wary. The scenery here is truly wild and breathtaking: majestic sal forest; wide expanses of elephant grass, and the gorges of the Ramganga river, with the backdrop of mountain ridges of the Siwalik Hills.

Hoping to see you in Corbett country soon!
